How do you stimulate the clitoris?

Gentlemen, female pleasure does not depend on the size of your penis or the intensity of your thrusts, but on your skill and your ability to adapt.

In 2023, it is no longer a secret: clitoral stimulation is the key to female pleasure!

In this article, we share some tips and techniques to help you learn how to stimulate the clitoris, one of the most erogenous zones of the female body…

Anatomy of the clitoris

The clitoris is an erectile organ located in the vulva, at the base of the mons pubis. It is made up of erectile tissue, spongy bodies and cavernous bodies. Its external part has a glans (3 to 6 mm) covered by a hood of skin itself connected to the labia minora. Its internal part has two roots and two vestibular bulbs surrounding the vagina. Although only the glans and the hood are visible, the invisible part of the clitoris gives it an overall size of approximately 10 to 13 cm in total.

The temple of female pleasure…

Did you know that the clitoris has more than 10,000 nerve endings? By comparison, the glans of your penis — which is itself very sensitive — contains between 4,000 and 6,000. The clitoris is therefore an extremely erogenous zone whose sole purpose is… Pleasure!

This little rosebud is without doubt the gateway to female pleasure! Stimulating the clitoris with fingers or the tongue helps to lubricate your partner's vagina and helps her reach orgasm. During orgasm, a woman experiences powerful spasms, her muscles contract, her chest swells and her heart rate accelerates.

Clitoral orgasm VS vaginal orgasm

Freud — the iconic figure of psychoanalysis — long promoted the idea that there were two types of women:

  • the clitoral woman, who reached orgasm through clitoral stimulation;

  • the vaginal woman, who reached orgasm through vaginal stimulation.

Female anatomy

Today, however, we know that all women are clitoral! This confusion was probably due to a lack of knowledge about female anatomy. As mentioned earlier, the clitoral bulb surrounds the vagina: what is called a vaginal orgasm is in fact a clitoral orgasm achieved through internal stimulation of the clitoris!

The different ways to stimulate the clitoris

Caresses

External stimulation of the clitoris is highly effective. To give your partner pleasure, the best approach is to use delicate strokes on the clitoral glans, as well as around that area (labia minora, vaginal entrance…). When a woman is aroused, she produces vaginal lubrication, a natural lubricant that facilitates penetration.

Internal stimulation

Generally, digital penetration (fingering) comes after caressing. Indeed, once the genitals are wet and swollen with arousal, penetration will be far more pleasurable. This type of stimulation allows you in particular to stimulate the G-spot, an erogenous zone connected to the internal part of the clitoris.

Start by inserting one finger, then gradually add more if you feel it is bringing pleasure to your partner. Some people manage to fit an entire hand inside the vagina. That said, one or two fingers is more than enough to make a woman orgasm! While you perform a back-and-forth motion, you can continue stimulating the clitoris at the glans (the external part): this will intensify the sensations.

Cunnilingus

A well-executed cunnilingus can send a woman to seventh heaven in just a few strokes of the tongue. This practice involves licking, sucking and kissing the vulva. While you attend to your lover's clitoris with your mouth, there is nothing stopping you from fingering her at the same time to heighten the sensations and help her reach orgasm.

How do you caress the clitoris properly?

As the clitoris is a sensitive organ, it is recommended to touch it gradually and with great care. That said, every woman is different — there is no foolproof masturbation technique.

Some women enjoy repeated movements, others prefer variety. There are also practices that appeal more than others: some women love cunnilingus, while others are reluctant to have their genitals licked (due to a taboo or a previous bad experience).

Rather than putting pressure on yourself, find out about your partner's sexual preferences and take the time to listen to her body. Her breathing, her moans and the movements of her hips will tell you what she enjoys. At the start, don't hesitate to try out different caresses, change the rhythm and ask your partner how she is feeling.

Finally, don't forget that you can also stimulate the clitoris during penetrative sex!

The 3 things to avoid during masturbation and sex

  • Rough movements

During masturbation, rough movements are often unpleasant — even painful — especially at the start of foreplay. Avoid touching the clitoris frantically and opt instead for a gentle touch. Once your partner is well lubricated, you can move on to a more firm stimulation.

  • Mechanical movements

Rushing through foreplay with mechanical movements risks boring your partner in bed. If she shows no signs of pleasure, there is no point continuing the same movements with your fingers. Be playful, inventive and curious! Have fun with her pleasure by varying the rhythm and the gestures.

  • Having sex without foreplay

It is almost only in films that sex without foreplay feels good for women. In real life, it is a whole different story! Stimulating the clitoris before penetration (digital, vaginal or anal) is the most effective way to set the scene: you will build arousal, and above all… Pleasure!

However, if your partner doesn't get very wet, that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't enjoying herself: nature (and in particular issues with vaginal dryness) means that lubrication varies from person to person. We recommend purchasing some lubricant to make sex more comfortable.

The best sexual positions for stimulating the clitoris

The 69 position

The 69 position involves simultaneous oral sex with your partner (fellatio and cunnilingus in a heterosexual relationship). It can be performed in 2 different ways:

both partners lie on their sides facing opposite directions;
one partner lies on their back and the other positions themselves on top facing the opposite direction.

During the 69 position, you can also insert your fingers into your partner's vagina.

The cowgirl position

In the cowgirl position, the man lies on his back and his partner straddles him. The friction of her vulva against the man's pubic area stimulates the clitoris and greatly facilitates female orgasm. Moreover, in this position, the woman controls the movements, the depth of penetration and the rhythm.

The spooning position

The woman lies on her side and the man lies behind her to penetrate her. Spooning is one of the most sensual positions in the Kama Sutra. Your hands will be free, so you can touch the clitoris of your partner while making love with her.

The sleeping beauty position

The sleeping beauty position is nothing more than a lying-down doggy style: the woman lies flat on her stomach and the man lies on top of her. Clitoral stimulation happens through the friction of the vulva against the mattress. As well as being highly arousing, this position is pleasurable for both partners!

There are countless techniques for stimulating the clitoris during foreplay or penetrative sex. The clitoris is an erectile organ as magical as it is subtle! The key is to listen to your partner's body and to be patient in your intimate life…
